Through guided demonstrations, observational exercises, and longer drawings, students will expand their understanding of proportion, space, value, composition, and mark-making while learning to work with more complex subjects and create stronger, more resolved drawings.

Weekly Course Outline

  • Week 1: Seeing Relationships — Proportion, Shape & Space
Strengthen proportion and measuring skills while working with more complex arrangements of objects. Explore angles, overlapping forms, and positive and negative space to create accurate, unified drawings.

  • Week 2: Creating Depth — Perspective & Spatial Relationships
Learn practical ways to create convincing depth and space through perspective, overlapping, scale, placement, and spatial relationships.

  • Week 3: Light, Value & Surface
Build upon basic value skills by exploring more complex light and shadow, contrast, and mark-making to create depth, form, and texture.

  • Week 4: Composition & the Finished Drawing
Bring the skills from Drawing I and II together in a more developed observational drawing while exploring composition, focal point, value organization, and expressive mark-making.
