"Dramatic Clouds & Skies in Watercolor" an online step-by-step demonstration with Alex Sharma (August 28 2026)

Fabulous skies inspire awe and are often the reason that we choose to paint a scene.  The sky is constantly changing from dawn to dusk, in rain or in sun, and the colors and cloud formations are what create the drama.   When a special sky is our focus, it becomes the visual anchor to our composition—essentially, a skyscape.

This paint along demo will cover the watercolor techniques used to obtain the “look” of clouds in their many aspects: rain, wind-swept, cumulonimbus, reflecting the setting sun, at sunrise etc. along with the atmospheric change of sky color.

Paint along in watercolor with Alex Sharma as she demonstrates specific brush strokes, wet-into-wet, dry brush and color mixing to obtain dramatic results.

You will need watercolor paper, a large flat/wash brush, a round brush size of your choice, and your watercolor paints. 

Alex will use the following blue-sky colors along with 5 other colors to change the clouds and sky for atmospheric perspective, time of day and location.  Use what colors you have.  You may not have all the below colors, but if you have at least 2 different blues, 1 red (preferably a crimson), 1 yellow, 1 green and burnt sienna, you should be just fine.

Alex will have these colors available:
Ultramarine Blue
Cerulean Blue
Phthalo Blue
Alizarine Crimson
Cadmium Yellow
Cadmium Red Light (an orange red)
Burnt Sienna
Sap, or other green

Attendees will receive a copy of the video on Monday afternoon following the demonstration, which will be good to re-watch as many times as you want for up to 30 days.

While this is a demonstration, and not a class, we do encourage you to ask questions throughout the demonstration because odds are if you're thinking it, someone else is too. We ask all participants to stay muted unless asking a question so that we don't pick up any background noise and ensure participants can hear and that our recording is clear as well.
