Discover how to create vibrant, expressive landscape paintings using the principles of impressionism in either pastel or oil. In this three-day workshop, award-winning artist Greg Barnes will share the design concepts and colorful painting techniques that have become the hallmark of his work. Through daily demonstrations, discussions, and plenty of individual instruction, students will learn how to simplify the landscape into strong value patterns, compose compelling paintings, develop harmonious color relationships, and apply confident, expressive brushstrokes or pastel marks.
Rather than copying nature literally, students will learn how to interpret the landscape with greater impact by emphasizing light, atmosphere, and mood. Whether working from reference photos or personal sketches, each participant will receive personalized guidance while completing several paintings fthroughout the workshop.
This workshop is appropriate for artists with some basic painting experience through advanced painters who want to strengthen their design skills and develop a more colorful, impressionistic approach.
By the end of the workshop, students will leave with a stronger understanding of composition, value, color harmony, and expressive techniques that can be applied to both pastel and oil painting. More importantly, they will gain practical tools for creating paintings that communicate light, mood, and the beauty of the landscape in a fresh, impressionistic style.
SKILL LEVEL: This 3-Day In-Studio workshop is designed for intermediate and advanced students who want to strengthen their design skills and develop a more colorful, impressionistic approach.

| Requirements: | SUPPLIES LIST: Pastel Supply List: Download a Printable Supply List NOTE: This is my suggested supply list. All supplies are not mandatory - bring what you have and we'll work with it!. PAPER: UART brnad, any grit 400 or above (I use 400) or similar pastel paper. Pastel Premier brand is another good option. I often have a roll of paper with me and will sell it by the sheet at workshops. You will need a couple sheets per day of 9"x12" or larger. SUPPORT: Large enough to accommodate your paper size (drawing board, lightweight sign board, etc.) Masking tape OR clips to hold paper to drawing board PASTELS: We use SOFT pastels, NOT oil pastels at least 36 landscape; Good brands to start with: Rembrandt, Unison, Schminke, Mount Vision, Terry Ludwig If you're just experimenting with pastel, try a half-stick set from Rembrandt, Schminke, Senellier, or Unison. You get more colors for the price. I also typically use the harder Nupastels to begin my paintings (especially Dark blues, burgundies and bottle green). I also sometimes bring extra sets of hand picked Mt. Vision pastels for sale during the workshop. Paper towel or similar smudging tool #2 Pencil and or Vine Charcoal (softer the better) & a sketchbook Your own reference Photo(s) to work from, either printed or from your tablet. Oil Supply List: Download a Printable Supply List NOTE: This is my suggested supply list. All supplies are not mandatory - bring what you have and we'll work with it! CANVAS: Bring a minimum of 6 canvases, sizes 9"x12" or similar size up to size 16"x20." I like to use oil or acrylic primed linen panels, but whatever you have should be fine. PAINTS: Primary colors (Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Lemon, Permanent Red (Rembrant Brand) and White. Also, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue, Transparent Red Oxide and Indian Yellow may be added to the primary palette PALETTE: any surface for holding and mixing your paint. Either wood, glass or gray disposable palette sheets will suffice. The palette is usually incorporated on your painting easel THINNER: Small container or ODORLESS mineral spirits, recommend Gamsol. ODORLESS ONLY - this is an Art League of Hilton Head rule BRUSHES: 3 or more flats (#6, 10 & 12). Flats are my preferred style of brush, but you may use whatever style you have EASEL: Art League of Hilton Head has plenty of aluminum standing easels for students to use during this in-studio workshop, however, you are welcome to bring a portable easel of your choice if you'd prefer. | Instructor Bio: |  American artist GREG BARNES began painting full time in 2002, on the heels of the 911 disaster. Feeling that “life is short” he finally took his Fine Art degree from Wake Forest University to heart. Greg became attached to soft pastels through his love of drawing and doing portraits when he first began to make a living as an artist. Soon he discovered plein air landscape painting to be his greatest joy, so he pursued that further. To jump start his art career, Greg took pastel and oil painting workshops with nationally recognized instructors Albert Handell and Scott Christensen. While selling at art festivals, Greg received requests from potential students to teach them what he knew. He then began teaching his own pastel and oil workshops. Now he divides his time between plein air painting events and teaching. His work has received numerous awards and is collected throughout the US and beyond. Plein air magazine and The Pastel Journal have highlighted Greg’s work with feature articles in 2019 and 2020.
