WHERE:

Let’s make some marks! In this dynamic two-day workshop, you will explore ways to bring energy, movement, and expressive mark-making into your oil paintings. Together we will embrace experimentation and cultivate a spirit of playful discovery in the studio. Through a series of guided exercises, you will work with a printmaker’s tool—the brayer— and water mixable oil paint to create bold, unexpected marks in combination with brush work and other miscellaneous mark making tools to layer textures and add energy within your paintings. We will also explore the exciting combination of oil paint with pastel and watercolor to expand your choices in how you approach your painting practice. Color theory, and how we choose our palette to create the mood and atmosphere in our work will also be touched on.

You can mix traditional oil paint with water mixable oil paint. If you are going to use traditional oil paints, please bring all of the supplies you like to use in your plein air or studio painting, such as mineral spirits, gamsol, brushes, cleaners, palette knife sets, etc. NOTE: All mineral spirits MUST be Odorless. If you bring spirits that are not odorless you will be asked to take them out of the studio, as this is an Art League of Hilton Head policy. Assortment of brushes Palette Knifes (no need to buy, i have some, just bring the ones you have if you have any) Rags/Roll of Viva Paper Towels Images for reference for day two of the workshop. Please bring them printed or on a tablet, as working from your phone is not ideal. Your images do not have to be high quality, they can be just color copies. It is also helpful if you paint them in black and white as well. One or two gessoed canvas panels or gessoed wood panels no smaller than 18" on one side. We will NOT be working on stretched canvas. Choose a panel shape that will work with your reference images, for example, if you are painting a landscape with an elongated size, you can work on a 12"x24" or 12"x36" panel shape. I will be bringing canvas panels and paper available for purchase at the workshop, incase you do not have enough with you, but please let me know in advance if you would like to purchase canvas panels at the workshop so I can ensure i bring enough. | Instructor: | Anne Strutz |
| Instructor Bio: | ![]() Anne Walker Strutz is an artist in motion, pushing boundaries by infusing movement and energy into her paintings. For Anne, painting begins with what you cannot see. A visual artist is like a magician, telling a story by creating an illusion of space, feelings, dimension, or fleeting moment, for the viewers. Anne’s journey as an artist has been a fulfilling adventure, leading her from fashion and textile design in NYC, to teaching art and developing art curricula. In 2013, Anne turned her focus to fine art and began passionately exploring the medium of pastel quickly earning her PSA Signature status and Master Pastelist as recognized by the International Association of Pastel Artists. With a desire to work on a larger scale, Anne began to paint in the oil medium. The experience of working in pastel exclusively for several years has influenced her approach to painting with oils following in the footsteps of the masters who often created smaller scale pastel painting prior to moving to the large scale oil works. Anne’s work has been featured in the Pastel Journal, Pratique Des Arts Magazine and Strokes of Genius publications. She has been a recurring featured author for Pastel Journal and Artist Magazine. Anne was integral in developing the Bi-Annual Global Pastel Society Grant for the International Association of Pastel Artists, which awards grants to pastel societies throughout the world to both teach the beauty of the pastel medium as well as provide community service in their local areas. Anne has been a recurring demonstrator at the International Association of Pastel Societies bi-annual convention. |
