"This is a 3 day outdoor painting workshop for intermediate to advanced painters working in oils or acrylics. It will include lecture, demonstration and practice, the three ingredients to effective instruction and learning. We will cover some so called “basic” elements of Drawing, Value, Color, Composition and Edges... all put into a package called “CONCEPT”, the basis for any painting that you paint.  I will work with each at their own level, and will spend a lot of time students easels, giving individual instruction, and will demo everything that I ask you to do.”

PLEASE HAVE:

This is a recommended Supply list... if you don't have any supplies then by all means use this as a starting off point. If you are already comfortable with what you are using, use those supplies. Buy as good as you can afford, but don’t buy so expensive that you’re afraid to use them. Quality in paint DOES make a HUGE difference. If you were to splurge in any two areas of the materials you use, it should be in the quality of the paint you buy, and the easel you use.

*REQUIRED* Exception… *Bring at least one 12x16 or 16x20 divided into fourth’s (1/4’s). Use tape to divide it equally vertically and horizontally so that you have 4 smaller areas to paint exercises on. *Bring IVORY BLACK PAINT!

EASELS… *Bring equipment made to be used painting outside with.* A French easel, OpenBoxM, EasyL, Art Box and Panel (made by James Coulter and my personal favorite), Strada. These are just some of what is available. A French full or half box is fine as long as you don’t have issues with carrying it as they are quite heavy. The others can all fit into a bag or back pack for transporting.

BRUSHES… Robert Simon’s ‘Signet’ Hog Bristle Brushes, or Robert Simon’s “Simply Simons” ( reasonably priced and lasting as long as any of the more expensive brushes of similar quality )(common sizes are all $3.99 at some art supply stores, and at Michaels Art and Craft stores), Utrecht “Rhenish” brushes are great too. Check the ferrules for tightness on all brushes when buying. Flats and Brights in sizes ranging from #4 to #12... # 6, 7 & 8 used most often. There are so many brands of very good brushes now that I recommend you look at what others are using, ask them what they think about them, and then try them out for yourself. Any other brushes, including some cheap’o Ox Hair brushes will at times come in handy.

PALETTE COLORS… We’ve found that the best palette for ‘students’ to use is the Split Primary Palette. That means that you’ll have a warm and cool version of each of the primary colors, plus white. You can add to that if your experience allows it, but all we “Require” for the workshop is the following list of colors. Brands will only be specified when a color is unique to a Brand.

*Note- If you’re an acrylic painter this same palette can be purchased with colors of the same names. Acrylics require a few more items to bring along if you want to paint with them. If you do, ask us and we will give you additional information about that.

Split Primary Palette
•Titanium White - We like Utrecht Titanium White. Sometimes mixed with a drying white. For that we recommend W&N Griffon Fast Drying Alkyd - Titanium White. The link is to Jerry’s Artarama.

•Cadmium Yellow Lemon

•Cadmium Yellow Deep - Rembrandt is the brand to get for this one!

•Cadmium Red Light… or… Napthol Red - Both work well in this palette and either are fine to have along.

•Permanent Alizarin… W&N, Gamblin, Utrecht are fine.

•Ultramarine Blue

•Manganese or Cerulean Blue Hue

•Perylene Black(a Winsor Newton color)

•Ivory Black

PAINTING KNIVES… An assortment of spade shaped palette knives… 1/2”, 1”, 2” and longer are

WHAT TO PAINT ON… For a 3 day workshop plan on needing 2 or 3 panels or canvases a day in sizes of 9x12 to 11x14. Don’t bring panels larger than 12x16 unless you’re Very experienced. (*see note at top about the exception to this). Bring more than that if you plan to paint before or after class time. Any oil or acrylic primed panels or boards, stretched cotton or linen canvases. Heavy water color paper, mat board, museum board, or hardboard (MDF) primed with acrylic primer is perfectly fine to paint on. Jerry's Artarama sells Centurion makes some inexpensive linen panels that are nice to paint on.Another option is to paint on the inexpensive canvas boards and canvases that Utrecht, Blick, Hobby Lobby, and Michael’s sell. These are fine for class work. If you use these however, we suggest that you re- prime them with an acrylic primer. They are a much better painting surface with an additional coat of primer.

GENERAL SUPPLIES…Umbrella, Brush washer for Gamsol or Turpenoid , Water bottle for drinking, Sunscreen, Hat, Bug Spray, Paper towels or cotton rags, Plastic trash bags, Gloves or Gloves In A Bottle (to protect hands from solvents and paint). It never hurts to have a multi- tool like a Leatherman in the bag, and some baby wipes for hand cleaning. very useful too.

Instructor: Marc Hanson
Instructor Bio:
MARC R. HANSON, O.P.A.M. was born 1955.

Having grown up in a military family, Marcs youth was spent on the move. He was born in Oxnard, California and spent some of his early school years there. But his geographical resume soon included Alaska, Florida, Arkansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Norway. After his fathers retirement from the Air Force, Marcs family settled in the small northern California community of Loomis. Marc began college as a biology major, but soon applied to and was accepted into Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, majoring in illustration. After Art Center and a brief stint as a staff illustrator in Sacramento, California, Marc moved to Minnesota where he lived for 33 years while raising a family and pursuing his art. He currently lives near Savannah, GA on Tybee Island.

I have pursued a career as a painter for many years now. Along the way my methods, materials and focus have evolved. A naturalist at heart, the landscape is the perfect vehicle for expressing the joy I have for the world that surrounds me. My real interest and challenge as a painter is how to best manipulate the core principles of painting into effective visual statements. Im most successful when Im able to communicate that joy to the viewers of my paintings.

Marc teaches landscape painting workshops locally and nationally. I love working with other painters in their pursuit to better their craft. My goal is not to have them assimilate my style and technique, but to teach them how to more closely examine the subject and apply the principles that representational painters must follow to become effective visual communicators. Marc has shown his work in galleries and museums nationally and internationally since the early 1980s.

He is a Master Signature Member of The Oil Painters of America (O.P.A.M.), having won an Award of Excellence at the O.P.A. National Exhibit in 2000, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011. In 2011 Marcs painting Right or Left was awarded Bronze Medal for Painting at the OPA National Exhibition in Coeur d Alene, ID. Among his many awards, hes placed four times in The Pastel Journals Pastel 100 competition.
