PASTELS: I do not use oil pastels I use hard pastels by NuPastels or Cretacolor or Rembrandt 548.3. I use soft pastels by Terry Ludwig, Richeson's, Unisons among others. Initial Block In: I use mostly BLUE VIOLET 244, BOTTLE GREEN 298P, ORCHID PINK 306, VIOLET HYACINTHE 254, and a DEEP ORANGE 212 sometimes 353 Cordova of the NuPastels, What you bring doesn't have to be the exact # I listed but yours should be close. Alternates: Cretacolor:239, Paynes Grey, 111 Orange, 133 Rose Madder, 139 Bluish Purple, 219 Sepia SOFT PASTELS: Bring a good from light to middle tones, to darks - I LOVE Terry Ludwig's darks. I like Giraults, Great American, Terry Ludwigs, Mount Vision and Blue Earth for neutrals. SUBSTRATES: Mostly UART Premium 400 Mount Boards 4-6 boards 9"x12" or 11"x14" in size so it doesn't curl when we add products for techniques. ALSO, Unmounted UART 320 or 400 cut into 4"x6", 5"x7" or 6"x8" two each. You can mount your own Uart Paper 400 on gator board using repositioning spray adhesive. I also use gator board NOT foamcore that i prime with clear gesso or textured gesso Multimediaartboard pink label for Pastels and others... I like very much Pastel Premier and Lux Archival, each gives a different result. Backing Board for the Substrate Larger than the size of the board or paper. I use a larger piece of Gatorboard (NOT Foamcore - too flimsy). Any Set of Watercolors - Cheap is OKAY Warms & Cools - I like Payne's Gray and Burnt Sienna specifically which is a cool and warm for contrast. Rubbing Alcohol 70% or 90% and a container for the alcohol - 90 dries the fastest. A brush for underpainting flat bristle brush #6 or #8 Tracing Paper (if needed to identify 3-5 big shapes) I ALSO USE: Glassine to protect my work, in a pinch wax paper. Clear gesso and I also use a sludge a cheap version of gesso - it's not clear, it's light gray. Fine pumice gel Art Spectrum Clear primer and pastel ground 400 grit, pastel dust, Workable Fixative - part of the process sometimes. Once I demo you can decide what you might want to try. No need to have everything I use. Use what you already have. This workshop is about techniques and possibilities... A good all purpose reasonable soft pastel set is Terry Ludwigs 14 Landscape Set... I line my easel with foil and add a wet paper towel to catch dust. MISC SUPPLEIS: VIVA Paper towels less lint small water spray bottle baby wipes a mirror to look back and see what the painting needs neutral beige masking tape and black artist tape to frame at the end of a painting a pencil sketchbook for thumb nails Tombows markers if you have them for thumb nails in varying values: light, medium light, medium dark and dark or a pencil Small palette knife hand wipes latex gloves (if desired) Portable easel (if desired) Your own landscape reference photos (In color and in black and white. Small 4"x6" or 6"x8" SIMPLE 3-5 BIG shapes. IPad is fine too. No Hawaiian sunsets...)
