WHERE:

(106 Cordillo Pkwy, Hilton Head Island, SC)

Join instructor Robert Wortmann 1-Day workshop all about Tonalism.

Tonalism is a uniquely American art form that flourished between 1880 and 1920. Tonalist art was primarily landscape and focused on the feeling, mood or emotion of the scene rather than producing a realistic representation of the subject. Often painting scenes of very early morning, very late in the evening, or foggy, rainy days, the tonalists used subtle colors that were restful and harmonious to the eye and employed soft and lost edges to create an atmospheric perspective and a poetic feeling. Famous tonalist painters included James McNeill Whistler, George Innes, Albert Pinkham Ryder and John Henry Twachtman.

In this workshop we will review the characteristics of tonalism, and example works by famous painters. Following a demonstration, students will work on their own paintings with one-on-one consultation from the instructor. The workshop will conclude with a group critique of everyone's work.

The instructor will demonstrate using soft pastels, but students are welcome to use the medium of their choice.

Instructor: Robert Wortmann
Instructor Bio:
When ROBERT WORTMANN was in the third grade, a tempura painting of his was selected to represent his school in a student exhibition at the Nelson Atkins Gallery of Art in Kansas City.

Art was always his favorite subject in school. But he stopped taking art classes once he got to high school. After all, if you wanted to attend a competitive college, you had to take more practical courses, such as Latin.

After graduating from Carleton College he attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine. During his career he was a rheumatologist and worked at six medical schools.

About 30 years ago he began painting again, working with oils. But about twenty years ago he discovered pastels and has not looked back. His work explores nature using color to provide a pleasing emotional response form the viewer.

Over the last few years Robert's work has received numerous awards. His paintings can be viewed at the Art League of Hilton Head Gallery and exhibitions of the Hilton Head Plantation Artists Association.

Robert is a member of the Saxton River Art Guild, the Pastel Society of New Hampshire and the Pastel Society of South Carolina.
