"Painting the Portrait in Pastel" with Karen Wilharm (February 2025)

PAINTING THE PORTRAIT IN PASTEL
with Guest Instructor Karen Wilharm
WHEN:
3 FULL-DAYS
Friday to Sunday

(9am to 4pm)
February 14, 15, 16, 2025
WHERE:
Art League Academy

(106 Cordillo Parkway, Hilton Head Island, SC)
In this 3-Day workshop, Karen will explain her process along with the concepts of proportion, light on form and color theory as they apply to the portrait. Her intention is to create a strong illusion of three-dimensional space and an unmistakable likeness with her subjects.

Karen will lead students through her process of painting the pastel portrait from the initial drawing to the final stages of refining. Using a photo reference, she will begin with teaching strategies to accurately draw the head, place the features and indicate the major light and shadow shapes. Karen will then demonstrate how to identify and lay in "average colors" of the shadow and light regions. She will show how she adjusts her general color notes by mixing and layering to "turn the color dials" on hue, value, temperature and chroma to achieve the desired relationships. During the final phase the portrait she will introduce techniques such as scumbling, glazing and hatching as she carefully makes corrections, refines edges and creates subtle nuances to bring the portrait to a polished finish.

We hope you can join us and dive into 3-Days of all things portraiture!

NOTE: Students have the option to sign up for 1-Day of drawing the portrait with Karen the day prior to this workshop. Instructor Bio:
KAREN WILHARM is a classical Portrait Painter based in Savannah, GA. She works mostly in pastel, oil and charcoal. Her absolute favorite challenge is capturing the likeness and spirit of an individual person. With a strong appreciation for the human form, Karen's career began in Medical Illustration. Upon graduating with a Masters Degree in 2003, she began a freelance business in Medical Illustration and painted portrait commissions in her free time. Karen spent 9 years as a part time Drawing Professor in the Foundations Department at Savannah College of Art and Design and taught several workshops at the Jepson Center of the Arts and the Studio School Savannah. As her interest in the portrait grew, she traveled around the country to paint under the instruction of Master Artists such as Robert Liberace, Max Ginsberg, Stephen Early, Kerry Dunn, Tom Nash, Margaret Dyer, Joseph Todorovich, Jeff Hein and Adam Clague. Karen has been a member of the Portrait Society of America as well as Oil Painters of America, both of which have included her works in juried shows and granted her awards in nation-wide competitions.
