"Drawing the Portrait" with Karen Wilharm (February 2025)

with Guest Instructor Karen Wilharm

(9am to 4pm)
February 13, 2025

Art League Academy
(106 Cordillo Parkway, Hilton Head Island, SC)

In this 1-Day workshop, Karen will lead students through her process of drawing the portrait from the initial measurements to the final stages of refining. Using a photo reference, she will begin with teaching strategies to accurately draw the head, place the features and indicate the major light and shadow shapes. Karen will demonstrate how to define the shadow and light regions which give the illusion of form. She will show how she compresses values for a strong design and how she makes corrections through out, achieving an unmistakable likeness of her subject.

Students have the option to sign up for 1-Day of drawing the portrait with Karen the day prior to her 3-Day workshop, Painting the Portrait in Pastel. This workshop will teach important concepts such as finding proportions, establishing a value structure and creating edge variety. Learning drawing concepts in black and white will greatly impact the success of your efforts during the following 3-Day workshop.

NOTE: Students who take this workshop prior to Karen's 3-Day portraiture in pastel workshop will feel more confident in their drawing. The 3-Day workshop, Painting the Portrait in Pastel, will be held on February 14, 15, 16, 2025. Click HERE to read more or sign up for that class now!

Instructor Bio:
KAREN WILHARM is a classical Portrait Painter based in Savannah, GA. She works mostly in pastel, oil and charcoal. Her absolute favorite challenge is capturing the likeness and spirit of an individual person. With a strong appreciation for the human form, Karen's career began in Medical Illustration. Upon graduating with a Masters Degree in 2003, she began a freelance business in Medical Illustration and painted portrait commissions in her free time. Karen spent 9 years as a part time Drawing Professor in the Foundations Department at Savannah College of Art and Design and taught several workshops at the Jepson Center of the Arts and the Studio School Savannah. As her interest in the portrait grew, she traveled around the country to paint under the instruction of Master Artists such as Robert Liberace, Max Ginsberg, Stephen Early, Kerry Dunn, Tom Nash, Margaret Dyer, Joseph Todorovich, Jeff Hein and Adam Clague. Karen has been a member of the Portrait Society of America as well as Oil Painters of America, both of which have included her works in juried shows and granted her awards in nation-wide competitions.
