This class will introduce the student to the basic materials and tools needed for learning how to draw with graphite pencils.
Whether you are an absolute beginner or returning for a refresher course this one-day class will focus on “How to get started” in using these materials confidentially.
You will be introduced to a full range of pencil grades and why and when to use them. Through the use of exercises and discussion, we will practice the techniques that can take you to the next level of drawing. This course will touch upon seeing rather than remembering; shapes. You will learn how to see the world around you differently through these observations and practice. We will establish the habits you need to keep your paper clean, erase safely without discouragement, and learn what makes for an interesting subject to draw.

Instructor Bio: | ![]() ARTIST STATEMENT: "What if you could see a soul reflected through their drawn image" I am a graphite and charcoal artist driven to capture expression of mind, will, emotion and movement through the careful and lengthy process of life drawing. My subjects are often moving and larger than life where possible. I began this figurative focus at the start of my art-making life. As I have grown in my walk of faith, so has my art continued to remind me of Scripture. I seek to cast this vision to the viewer; beauty, light, and hope & even in the face of the darkness that confronts us in this world. Defy the darkness, it shall not prevail. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Laura was born a middle child on an Air Force base, Chanute in the state of Illinois. Laura has lived in New York, Maryland, Portugal, and currently South Carolina. In Maryland, she majored in Fine Arts at AACC and later attended the Schuler School of Fine Art in Baltimore. Laura was working in sculptural and kiln-fired art when first introduced to drawing. The love of drawing soon overtook her art glass, and so began a love affair with graphite, charcoal, and figure drawing. Laura's particular subjects of interest are dancers and movement. A dancer herself, this focus coupled with her love of Christ, meshed. Scriptural passages are titles in this particular body of work. Laura's work has been in many galleries, featuring her glass and drawings. These include The Torpedo Factory, Local by Design, and Quiet Waters Park Art shows. Laura serves as an Art educator for many locations and schools and has served on the Arts curriculum board for OLLI at USCB. Laura has a home and studio open to the public in Beaufort's Atelier off Bay. She is also a member of the Portrait Society of America and does commission projects.
