IN-PERSON: "Lovely Skies, Seas and Trees" 3-Days of Plein Air with Guest Instructor Gary Baughman

3-Days in Plein Air with Instructor Gary Baughman

The instructor, Gary Baughman, weaves a scientific understanding of light and color into his teaching segments. Students will glean a fresh understanding of how to render subject matter with an enlightened eye toward rendering accurate and interesting compositions, shapes, values, colors, and edges.
This course is tailored for intermediate painters and/or beginners with good drawing skills. Baughman is a patient encourager whose teaching style focuses on “making strengths stronger and weaknesses irrelevant.”  Plein Air painting requires students to work rapidly in the alla-prima mode to capture the fleeting shadows and lighting as the sun moves across the sky. Baughman will daily demonstrate this method of working wet in wet and in one pass.
Students will be encouraged to work small, 9x12, or 11x14 so that at least one painting can be finished each day of the workshop. Gary will provide one-on-one supervision and instruction to each student's easel side. He will give a gentle, positive critique of works at the end of each painting day for reenforcement of the students’ newly acquired skills and ideas.
Students may work in oil or pastel. In case of inclement weather, a classroom will be available for study.

Skill Details: This class is designed for intermediate level oil and pastel artists or for beginners with good drawing skills.
Materials Included: No materials are included in this class
Requirements: PLEASE BRING:

Minimum of a large set of NuPastels (50) the more the better.

Good brands of softer pastels: Terry Ludwig, Great American, Rembrandt, Richeson. Half stick boxes are economical and very good for learning.

Uart 400, Canson Touch

Backing board
Masking tape
1" paint brush
rubbing alcohol or Gamsol
Gum eraser
barrier creme or protective gloves if desired

*Please avoid inexpensive, 'student grade' paints found at Hobby Lobby; The pigments are weak and the oil makes the paint run. Some recommended brands: Gamblin, Rembrandt, Grumbacher, Windsor-Newton, Utrecht. Call me if you have questions while you are shopping.

Base Colors 37ml Tubes:
Ultramarine Blue
Alizarin Crimson
Cadmium Yellow Light
Cadmium Red Light or Medium
Titanium White
Chromatic Black (Gamblin)

Additional Optional Colors:
yellow ochre
Sap Green (prefer Gamblin or Utrecht brand)
Phthalo Green and/or Phthalo Blue
Transparent Red Oxide
Burnt Umber

Flat, size 2, 8,10 and Round, size 2 and 8.
A size 8 filbert is an all-around brush I use a lot.

I recommend fairly stiff synthetics or bristle, with a good sharp edge. (example of good brand choices: 'Silver' Brands, Rosemary or some 'Princeton' brands, (i.e. 6100), Pro Stroke (bristle brushes)

You may also use palette/ painting knives if you like, but we will concentrate mostly on brush use.

Recommend traditional wood palettes, or glass palette or typical pochade box set ups . Paper palettes can be used in the beginning, hard palettes may come later.

Please have at least six 9x12 and/or 11x14 available for use in the 6-week class. We will be finishing at least one painting per class period. I work on Centurian Linen panels available from Jerry's Artarama.

Odorless mineral spirits for brush washing (Gamsol is a good one) carried in a metal brush washer with spill proof lid. Galkyd, or Galkyd Lite or Gamblin-Gel, or Liquin, may be used as a painting medium.

Plenty of paper towels or rags. I recommend Viva brand paper towels.

Easels Bring your own, or make arrangements to borrow one from Art League Academy.

The Instructor will provide some references but students are encouraged to bring their own photo references if we have to work in the studio due to inclement weather.

Please contact Gary if you have any questions or are not sure about supplies.

"Art is an expression unlike any other. Art lets the viewer past my skin and into my heart. Art is not something that I do but is an expression of that which already exists within me even though I may not know at the time exactly what it means. We all have an inner voice waiting patiently to be heard. As an artist, that voice gets to be heard and seen by the viewers of my work and by me as it moves our emotions and plays upon our heartstrings. I have been brought to tears viewing an artist's painting and I have seen collectors of my work overcome in the same way. What is it about a two-dimensional piece of paper or canvas covered with pigment in a seemingly random way that causes these deep feelings within the human inner soul? What is it about a melody that keeps you humming or whistling it all day? Imagination from the heart of the artist or songwriter evokes this special feeling within the viewer or listener. Art, like music, connects and awakens that part of us which we already possess, the voice within our soul.

How do I connect with viewers and collectors of my artistic creations? I try to move them to identify with the subject matter, be it large as a mountain or as small as a rosebud by creating my own individual interpretation. As an artist, I engage the viewer by re-interpretation of reality through manipulation and exaggeration of shape, value, color, line, texture, and balance. Art is a springboard for imagination; it is an endless array of beautiful gifts or a powerful way of expressing a point of view.

Art survives the ages. Great fine art should become a legacy, passing from generation to generation. I can think of no finer legacy than to have family descendants in future generations on my family tree pass down my surviving works with other family treasures and heirlooms. Fine art has a genealogy as collections in every great museum will attest. Great art stands the test of time. It is my sincere hope that purchasers of my works will enjoy their purchases each day of their lives and will be able to pass them on to an appreciative member of the next generation. Every piece of art that I feel is worthy enough to leave my studio is intended for that very purpose. Every artwork put up for sale is the very best work I am capable of at that time, full of every bit of imagination and skill that I can give it. I use only the finest artist's materials available with the intent that the work may be on view for at least the next 200 years.

When I affix my name to my work, it is an endorsement giving the viewer permission to stand at the window to my soul and look in for as long as they desire."
